Settlement classification – required from LPI session 19th May 09 Strategic settlements From the NPP page 67b) – the main settlements of the National Park which have the greatest range of existing services and infrastructure which can best accommodate increased growth From the Local plan page 61 7.2 – settlements where the majority of development and provision of facilities should be provided Key consideration: . population size (exceeding 1000 - existing and projected in light of potential new development options) . schools – including primary and secondary . supermarket . industrial estate . wide variety of local shops . identifiable town centre . variety of leisure facilities . variety of cafes/pubs/hotels . facilitis to meet needs of tourism industry including accommodation and activities . community facilities including meeting halls and local authority access points . availability of utilities/infrastructure to accommodate new development . transport infrastructure Intermediate settlements From the NPP page 67b) – other settlements in the National Park which require growth that meets the communities’ needs , but also reflect the scale and qualities of services and infrastructure present From the Local Plan page 61 7.2 – settlements where the development should support the local communities and ensure their sustainable future. Key consideration: . population size (less than 1000 - existing and projected in light of potential new development options) . primary school . local shops to meet community needs . core with mixed use rather than clearly identifiable retail centre . limited r no leisure facilities . limited provision of cafes/pubs/hotels . limited facilities to meet needs of tourism industry including accommodation and activities . limited or no community facilities such as meeting halls and local authority access points . availability of utilities/infrastructure to accommodate proposed level of new development . limited transport infrastructure PAGE 2 Rural settlements From the Local Plan page 61 7.2 – settlements with limited opportunities for growth which would help consolidate the existing settlement. consolidated existing development and in response to local community aspiration to have settlement included within the Local Plan, rather than have development considered under Policy 23 or 24.
